On An Ocean Alone...

Several years ago, I started a series of twelve linoleum block prints that were sized three by five feet. The series is called Note Cards on Society, with a direct reference to the standard 3" x 5" cards used in research. This print, On An Ocean Alone, is exploriing the relationships of strangers. This busy corner is a study of different types of people in America, and how they all come together to live in the same place, yet a common human emotion is to feel alone. Only in the foreground do we see the hope that two strangers can share a moment of commonality with a glance and a brief encounter. The city continues to move at it's fast pace, such as life, but every once and a while we stop to figure out our bearnings.

Studio notes:

My husband just said, "You know you're not on an ocean alone." My responce, "not anymore..."

I got the idea for this print one day when I was walking across Market Street at 5th street in Louisville, and meet eyes with a fellow wearing a shoulder bag.

Also, the girl in the print very much resembles a friend of mine from Frankfort and now Louisville, Sarah.
